How Props Transform Your Practice: Belts, Blocks & Chairs

Iyengar yoga is famous for one thing above all: precision. And precision is achieved with props. A belt lengthens your reach, a block raises the floor, a chair supports balance, and the wall gives your spine a reference point. Together they allow every posture to be practised correctly — from the very first class.
Why alignment matters
When a posture is aligned, the body works the way it was designed to. Joints are not compressed, muscles are engaged evenly, and the breath flows freely. Poor alignment is the most common cause of discomfort in yoga — props exist to eliminate it.
A few props you will meet
Belts help you extend the arms and legs when they cannot yet reach — essential in postures like Paschimottanasana. Blocks bring the floor closer, making standing postures accessible. Chairs support inversions and forward bends for anyone who wants to practise safely. The wall is our favourite teacher: it reveals habits you did not know you had.
Props are for everyone
Many students think props are only for beginners or people recovering from injury. In the Iyengar tradition, the opposite is true: advanced practitioners use them to refine postures they have practised for decades. A prop is never a compromise — it is a tool for going deeper.
Experience it yourself in Bruchköbel-Roßdorf or Erlensee — all props are provided at the studio, and the first trial class is free.
